Loisium Wine Visitor Center and Hotel

Langenlois, Vienna, Austria

Built above a celebrated wine vault system some 900 years old, the new wine center and hotel were designed by Steven Holl Architects. The project is composed of three parts: the existing vaults, wine center, and 82 room hotel with restaurant, conference and meeting facilities. The geometric spacing of the surrounding vineyards is carried through to connect the 3 elements. The cube-shaped visitors center leans 5 degrees towards the entrance to the ramp to the winer cellar network. Built mostly of reinforced concrete, 1/3 of the visitors center is below grade.

Earthlike materials and palette combined with the views of the landscape create a strong connection and relationship for the structure within its location. A courtyard and terrace provide outdoor seating, with guest rooms located on 2 upper floors, with the ground floor being open and transparent.
