Sunshine 100 Beijing

Beijing, China

This 1,120 unit multi-story residential and office development in Beijings central business district comprises two 34 story residential towers with a connecting seven story office building, two additional 34 story apartment blocks and a 12 story office tower connected to two adjacent 6 story office blocks.

The design concept takes the urban design traditions of Beijing and reinterprets them in a contemporary manner. The axial arrangement of forms, the use of the grid and the primacy of the square within the overall geometry are dominant design ideas borrowed from Chinese traditions, here applied to the siting of the residential form. The residential towers are designed as a combination of square shafts or sticks each one distinctively coloured in colours of the sun: yellow, red and orange.

Recesses for windows within the facade are planned in a seemingly random pattern. These two concepts help to provide individuality and identity for unit owners when compared to the repetitiveness and uniformity found in most residential developments. The towers are planned with individual units positioned to maximise exposure to the highly desirable southern sun during the long winter months. The brand name Sunshine 100 refers, in part, to the 100% sun exposure to all units.
