Art Gallery of Alberta
| Edmonton, Alberta, Canada |
Originally founded in 1924, growth of the collection required an extension in 1990, then the need for an additional building, which opened in the beginning of 2010. Designed by Randall Stout Architects, the flowing steel mesh, glass and zinc reflect the changing light and was inspired by the Aurora Borealis seen in Edmonton, and the layout of the city itself.
The new gallery adds gallery space, a restaurant, shop and renovation of the existing 150 seat theater, and an expanded art education center. The classroom and studio space has been doubled, and a rental space for functions added, along with outdoor sculpture garden and "floating" private lounge. With a combination of reflective materials and an artificial borealis white light installation which contrasts with the reflection of the dark nights sky on the undulating stainless steel facade, the gallery gives homage to the Borealis. |
